What are the benefits of delegating and sharing responsibility?

A MOMENT with GOD

Moses replied, “. . . The people come to me to get a ruling from God. When a dispute arises, they come to me, and I am the one who settles the case between the quarreling parties. I inform the people of God’s decrees and give them his instructions.” “This is not good!” Moses’ father-in-law exclaimed. “You’re going to wear yourself out—and the people, too. This job is too heavy a burden for you to handle all by yourself.”

Moses was an enormously gifted leader, but he fell into the trap of believing he had to do it all himself. It is possible to be too responsible. When you stretch yourself too thin, you put yourself and others at risk. You can wear yourself out, make others wait, prevent people from having the opportunity to use their gifts, and keep them from growing spiritually by serving others. In the process, people become dissatisfied and distracted, and God’s work is delayed. Jethro’s advice to Moses in the book of Exodus offers us a godly strategy for leading people and getting things done: delegate and disciple. Delegation can provide a divine moment for those who are assigned the task because it stretches them, causes them to rely on God, helps them feel useful, and inspires them to catch the vision of their leaders.

DIVINE CHALLENGE

JESUS CAME AND TOLD HIS DISCIPLES, “I HAVE BEEN GIVEN ALL AUTHORITY IN HEAVEN AND ON EARTH. THEREFORE, GO AND MAKE DISCIPLES OF ALL THE NATIONS, BAPTIZING THEM IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER AND THE SON AND THE HOLY SPIRIT. TEACH THESE NEW DISCIPLES TO OBEY ALL THE COMMANDS I HAVE GIVEN YOU.”   Matthew 28:18-20
