Conscience

Conscience

MY QUESTION for GOD

How does my conscience help me?

A MOMENT with GOD

Speaking among themselves, they said, “Clearly we are being punished because of what we did to Joseph long ago. We saw his anguish when he pleaded for his life, but we wouldn’t listen.”

Genesis 42:21

Cling to your faith in Christ, and keep your conscience clear. For some people have deliberately violated their consciences; as a result, their faith has been shipwrecked.

1 Timothy 1:19

My conscience is clear, but that doesn’t prove I’m right. It is the Lord himself who will examine me and decide.

1 Corinthians 4:4

Your conscience helps you understand when you have fallen out of line with God’s will. It is God’s gift to each of us to keep us sensitive to his moral code. But you must use the gift. If you don’t listen to and obey your conscience, it will become harder and harder to hear it. It can even malfunction if not properly cared for. It can become a flawed witness that may condemn you too harshly or let you off too easily. Your conscience will only function effectively when you stay close to God, spend time in his Word, and make an effort to understand your own tendencies toward right and wrong. If your conscience is working faithfully, it will direct your heart and mind to determine right from wrong. It will give you a strong inner sense, a voice of accountability, toward what is right. If you do not have a reputation for doing the right thing or if you are unmoved by evil or injustice, it may indicate that your conscience has become weak or inactive. Leaders without a conscience will harm those they lead. Let God sharpen and resensitize your conscience through his holy Word. Then your conscience will speak to you in harmony with God himself.
