Brokenness

Brokenness

MY QUESTION for GOD

Why is brokenness a quality that a leader should develop?

A MOMENT with GOD

David confessed to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” Nathan replied, “Yes, but the Lord has forgiven you, and you won’t die for this sin.”

2 Samuel 12:13

Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins. Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin. For I recognize my rebellion; it haunts me day and night. Against you, and you alone, have I sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight. You will be proved right in what you say, and your judgment against me is just.

Psalm 51:1-4

The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God.

Psalm 51:17

My hands have made both heaven and earth; they and everything in them are mine. I, the Lord, have spoken! I will bless those who have humble and contrite hearts, who tremble at my word.

Isaiah 66:2

When leaders fall into sin or tough times, they must also fall to their knees. David committed adultery with Bathsheba and then had her husband murdered—it doesn’t get much worse than that. Yet when he was confronted (see 2 Samuel 12), David didn’t run from God. He didn’t make excuses for his failure, nor did he give up in despair. Instead, he acknowledged God’s justice and cast himself on God’s mercy. He even made his confession public when he wrote Psalm 51. When you experience brokenness, you become aware of your full dependence upon God. Your pride and self-sufficiency are literally broken down. Brokenness comes most often through circumstances that overwhelm you or through sin that forces you to realize that the only way out of your mess is through God’s help. Those who are open about their brokenness, as David was, have a greater influence upon others who need help. If you have been broken by sin or circumstances, allow God to use your experience to help others overcome their struggles.
