Be merciful unto me, O Lord: for I cry unto thee daily.

WHEN THE HOLY SPIRIT REALLY grips someone in conviction of sin, there is only one of two places for that person—namely, an insane asylum or the cross of Jesus. Conviction can be the origin of saving faith. Justification is given to a sinful person who willingly, as a pauper, accepts the forgiveness of God on the basis of what Jesus did for him through His death on the cross and His resurrection from the grave.

Holiness is likewise a gift of grace, given to a surrendered soul by God. It comes whenever a justified person willingly gives up the right to oneself and presents one’s body “a living sacrifice . . . acceptable unto God.” (Romans 12:1).

A life of faith, after a supreme act of faith for salvation, is as natural and subconscious as breathing.

Not by wrestling, but by clinging,

Shall we be most blessed.

Wrestling only brings us sorrow;

Clinging brings us rest.

When we stay our feeble efforts,

And from struggling cease,

Unconditional surrender,

Brings us God’s own peace.
