Deeper Life #200

Deeper Life #200

What is truth?

—John 18:38

OUR LORD MADE NO ATTEMPT to proclaim all truth so that we could go to His statements, as to a textbook, and verify things. Our Lord said nothing about what we call science, or art, or history; these are distinctly in the domain of human study. God never encourages laziness in the pursuit of such knowledge.

The boundaries of our knowledge must continually enlarge and alter. That is why no intelligent person would ever ask, “Does the Bible agree with the findings of modern science?” The question all enlightened persons should ask is, “Do the findings of modern science give us a better understanding of the scheme of things revealed in the Bible?”

Knowledge, for us, is difficult to gain—

Is difficult to gain, and hard to keep,

As Virtue’s self; like Virtue is beset,

With snares; tried, emptied, subject to decay.

Prayer Thought: Spirit of God, create within me a heart full of grace and a mind full of knowledge.
