When Faith Overlaps Faith

And teach [these things] to your children and your grandchildren.

Deuteronomy 4:9

Manasseh became king of Judah at age twelve and was a horribly wicked king until he came to know the Lord late in life. Manasseh’s son Amon took over the throne at age twenty-two and was likewise wicked. But when Amon’s son Josiah took the throne, he was one of Judah’s most godly kings. How do you explain the change?

Josiah’s righteousness was probably influenced by his first six years overlapping with his grandfather’s last six years. When Amon was assassinated after only two years as king, Josiah took the throne at age eight. Therefore, his first six years were under the godly influence of his grandfather, Manasseh. In Hebrew culture, it was the responsibility of grandfathers to teach their children and grandchildren the righteous standards of God.

Every parent knows that children look at their grandparents as sources of wisdom and security. Linking the latter years of one with the early years of the other is a perfect way to pass on a love for the Word of God.

Grandparents are in a perfect position to build faith in young hearts by declaring the precious promises of God.
