The Strong Tower

The Strong Tower

The name of the LORD is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are safe.

Proverbs 18:10

On January 25, 1934, German clergyman Martin Neimoller confronted Adolph Hitler face-to-face in the name of Christ. As a result, Neimoller was later seized by the Gestapo and held in solitary confinement.

On the morning of his trial, he was led from his cell by a green-uniformed official. As the two men walked through eerie underground passageways, Neimoller felt overwhelming fear.

Suddenly he heard a whispered voice: “The name of the Lord is a strong tower. The righteous run to it and are safe.” It was the guard, speaking under his breath.

With those words, Neimoller’s fear vanished. It was replaced by an indescribable peace that didn’t leave him, even during the dark days to come.

The Bible warns that prior to Christ’s return the days will be perilous (2 Timothy 3:1). But even when things seem to be in chaos around us, the name of our Lord is a strong tower. The righteous run to it and are safe. God’s purpose will guide us, His promises will sustain us, and His providence will keep us.
