Reading God’s Word

As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby.

1 Peter 2:2

Bible scholar Wilber Smith once wrote, “One single, normal issue of The Saturday Evening Post contains as much reading matter as the entire New Testament. Thousands of people read The Saturday Evening Post through every week. The number of Christians who read the New Testament through every week, or even one whole book . . . are so few that we need not talk about it.”

When Josiah became king in Jerusalem, he assigned workers to repair the temple. There they discovered a copy of the Law in the ruins. No one had seen it in years! Josiah quickly reasoned that Judah’s idolatry was directly tied to the absence of the reading of God’s Word. So he gathered all the people of Judah together, personally read to them the Law of God, and led them in a rededication to live according to God’s Word (2 Chronicles 34).

What connections can you make between your spiritual life and your consistency in studying God’s Word? If you are not consistently in the Bible, it will be impossible for the Bible to be consistently in you.
