Leaders In Giving

Be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

1 Timothy 4:12

William Wallace won the respect of his army of Scottish commoners by being on the front line of every battle they fought. The same commoners despised the fur-clad Scottish lords because they sat in the rear on horseback, never staining themselves with the soil or blood of battle.

In war or in peace—or in the life of the church—sacrifice is the admission price to the ranks of leadership. Leadership in giving must be no less sacrificial. If church leaders want members to give, they must set the example, as must parents who want their children to learn to give.

King David followed this pattern when raising money to build Israel’s first temple. He gave generously from his own personal wealth; then the leaders of families, tribes, and other officials followed his example and gave. Their examples caused the Israelite people to rejoice in their own giving.

Everyone leads someone. What kind of an example of giving are you providing for those you lead? Are those you lead faithful in giving?

Before examining their habits, make sure you have examined your own. From the pattern comes the product.
