Bless me—me also, O my father!

Genesis 27:34

Every child needs his parents’ blessing. Isaac longed for his father’s blessing, love, and approval. Ross Campbell, in How to Really Love Your Child, suggests that most parents really do love their children, but they don’t always convey that love to their children in a way that really makes the kids feel secure. A child doesn’t just need to be loved; he needs to feel loved. He needs to experience his parents’ blessings.

There are several excellent ways to bless our children with love. We can, of course, tell them we love them. But we can also convey our love through our eye contact, by the amount of time we spend with them, and by appropriate physical interaction with our youngsters—touching, holding, hugging, roughhousing, and kissing.

We also bless our children by pointing out their strengths. Motivational expert Zig Ziglar said, “Children who are raised in a spirit of praise and approval are going to be happier, more productive, and more obedient than the ones who are constantly criticized.”

After all, our heavenly Father liberally dispenses His blessings on us. He expects us to do the same to others, especially to our children.
