Giving To The Giver

For all things come from You, and of Your own we have given You.

Sixteen of Jesus’ thirty-eight parables were concerned with how to handle money and possessions. In the four Gospels, one out of every ten verses deals directly with the subject of money. The Bible has five hundred verses on prayer, less than five hundred verses on faith, but more than two thousand verses on money and possessions.

Do you think God is trying to tell us something? It seems to be a truism in life that generous people are comfortable talking about money and even more comfortable giving it away. Stingy people, on the other hand, obsess over keeping what they have and how to get more. Maybe that’s why Jesus, the most generous person in history, spoke so much about money—He understood its source, its use, and who owns it all.

Jesus’ ancestor David understood those same things. King David gave generously to build the temple and left us the basis for understanding money and material possessions: all things come from God, and from His gifts to us we give back to Him. When we get comfortable with that truth, we will be comfortable in giving generously as He directs.

If you are uncomfortable with giving, you may be opening your Bible less often than your checkbook!
