From Why To Who

We are more than conquerors through Him who . . .

Romans 8:37

The word why occurs twenty-four times in the Book of Job, as the afflicted patriarch grapples with multiplied problems. “Why did I not die at birth?” he wondered (3:11). “Why have you made me your target?” he asked God (7:20 NIV).

At one time or another, many of our Bible heroes asked the question, “Why?” Trace the word through a concordance, and you’ll be amazed at how frequently it’s found. Even our Lord Jesus cried, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” (Matthew 27:46).

But at some point we’ve got to move from “Why?” to “Who?”, as in, “Who loves us?” It is possible to worship God even when we don’t have all the answers. We live by promises, after all, not by explanations. Sometimes we’re in green pastures and beside still waters; other times we’re in the valley of the shadow of death. In both cases, our Shepherd is before us, and goodness and mercy are following.

Faith is keeping our eyes on Jesus regardless of the storms and shadows. It is being fully persuaded that God has the power to do what He has promised. It’s lifting our voices in praise even when our spirits are low.
