The Left Behind series of Christian novels has sold tens of millions of copies, and The Prayer of Jabez was the best-selling nonfiction book in America in 2001. So strong is the Christian publishing market that some major evangelical publishers have been sought by secular media companies.

If there is a danger in the rise of Christian publishing in recent years, it is the temptation to read more books about the Bible than the Bible itself. But keeping all things in balance, the wealth of good resources for Christians is a modern blessing that believers ought to take advantage of. For instance, try a good biography of a famous saint to find a stimulating role model or a devotional classic to keep you in the Word daily. Or perhaps you’d enjoy a missionary tale or exciting novel with biblical themes to read aloud as a family. Reading good Christian books can reinforce and illustrate the themes we read in Scripture.
