Careless Words

Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification.

Ephesians 4:29

It’s right there on page sixty-four. A filthy word that occurs in a children’s book entitled The Canning Season, along with quite a few other profanities and obscenities. And this isn’t just an obscure book for kids. The Canning Season was glowingly reviewed in the New York Times Book Review, and it won the 2003 National Book Award for Young People’s Literature.

Is there anything more out of place than profanity in a children’s book?

Yes. Profanity in the mouth of someone who claims to follow the Lord Jesus Christ. The Bible warns that we can grieve the Holy Spirit by the words we say. Paul wrote that we should avoid filthiness, foolish talk, and coarse jesting. Our mouths should be full of thanksgiving instead (Ephesians 5:4–5).

Have you allowed some careless words to slip into your vocabulary? Have you grown used to hearing profanity on television, in novels, and, yes, even in today’s children’s entertainment? Rededicate yourself to obedience in this area, and let no corrupt communication proceed from your mouth.
