Daily Power #266

You visit the earth and cause it to overflow; You greatly enrich it; The stream of God is full of water; You prepare their grain, for thus You prepare the earth. (Ps. 65:9 NASB)

Shortly after Amy and I were married, our next door neighbor’s little daughter came for one of her regular visits. Rachel was probably six years old at the time, and after giving me her usual big hug, she looked over her shoulder at my front yard and innocently observed, “My daddy says you have the worst yard on the whole block.” And the she ran off to find Amy and play.

I had to laugh, knowing she didn’t intend to insult me. But she—or should I say her dad—was correct. Our yard didn’t look good. Part of it didn’t have much grass at all, and the whole thing was choked with weeds. And it didn’t help living next to Rachel’s dad—the guy who’d won the “lawn of the month” award for something like seventy-nine months straight.

Amy suggested I seek out his advice, and he had plenty to offer. Who knew there was a right time to fertilize? And a two-week window in which to overseed? No one had ever told me anything about winter rye. And watering regularly seemed way too expensive for our starter budget. But all of these were required to grow and maintain a beautiful yard.

The same is true in your relationship with God. If you want to know him intimately, it requires time in prayer, worship, seeking God in his Word, and fellowship with other believers. It requires devoted attention.

Too often when I get busy, Lord, my relationship with you slips. Forgive me when I overlook doing what’s required to grow in my faith. Keep me rooted in your love for me.
