Daily Power #104

Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. (Heb. 10:23)

I’ve worked hard in my marriage and in my relationships with my kids never to break a promise. If I question my ability to keep my word, I try not to promise. I want my promise to mean something true and definite, something the people who love me can depend on.

I also suspect that promises today have lost their value because there’s often so little to back them up. Political candidates make promises, knowing full well they may change their minds tomorrow or after they’re elected. Big companies promise us whatever it takes to convince us to buy their products, but they may not always deliver with superior customer service. Married couples commit to vows of unbreakable love for one another, yet still our divorce rate hovers around 50 percent.

Sometimes even our friends don’t keep their promises. We get jaded and skeptical, unable to rely on those who give us their word. They promise to help us but then forget to show up. They commit to stand by us through thick and thin but drift away once they move out of town.

Promises mean something to God—they mean everything. He is immovable, unshakable, eternal. He’s our rock and never breaks his promises to us. The more we get to know him in prayer, the more we realize he’s always faithful.

We are not changed by the promises we make to God.

We are changed by the promises God makes to us.

I’ll admit, Lord, it can be hard for me to trust you sometimes, mainly because a lot of people have let me down. Today remind me that I can always count on you.
