For Appreciating Small Beginnings

WE ALL KNOW SUCCESS STORIES, but we don’t always know the journey. Like the megaminister who used to sleep in her car because she couldn’t afford a hotel room when traveling—or the billionaire entrepreneur who used to walk door-to-door, begging people to buy her products. These are real-life, hard-knock success stories about people who started small.

Zechariah 4:10 encourages, “Do not despise these small beginnings, for the LORD rejoices to see the work begin.” God rejoices because first steps are meaningful. For one, they cultivate creativity. The founders of the hospitality giant Airbnb raised start-up capital by selling cereal boxes. (It’s true! Look up Obama O’s and Cap’n McCain’s.)

God uses small starts to develop us in ways that big beginnings can’t. When you feel small and insignificant, pray—and you’ll be reminded that this season is ordained and has purpose. When your spirit is down and depleted, pray—and you’ll find that God’s strength is more than enough.

If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones.

PRAYERFUL THOUGHTS

Dear Lord,

Small beginnings are discouraging and difficult. At times I wonder, Is this venture ordained by you? Is it even a good idea? With not enough support and little progress, I’m not sure I want to go on. Lord, fill me with strength and send creative solutions. Please help this venture grow. You are the God who turns nothings into somethings. So turn my small start into a success story.
