Trusting Unconditionally
trust - Trusting Unconditionally
My heart trusted in Him, and I am helped. Psalm 28:7
I (Teresa) have come to realize that I’ve wanted to trust David with only the areas in which he’s proven trustworthy. But trust is like love—it can’t be conditional. Trusting David out of my feelings is wrong. I have to believe the best of him. I don’t believe David ever consciously tries to hurt me, so when I withhold my trust, I’ve already judged his motives.
The times when I’ve been challenged to trust David in a deeper way or to trust him after a time of pain have been difficult. Everything in me wants to protect my heart and run from discomfort. My only source of help has been the trustworthiness of our heavenly Father. God has reassured me that I must trust Him first. I must trust the Holy Spirit to get David’s attention, work on his heart, or work on mine. The results have been amazing. When I have placed my trust in God’s ability and His timing, I’ve been helped every time. Have things always gone my way or happened as I expected? No, but the Lord has been faithful to provide for my needs.
Father, only as I keep my eyes on You and trust You can I totally trust my spouse.
As I take practical steps to trust David, I have to remember the positive (not just the painful) parts of our marriage. I have to tell myself the whole truth about my husband and then choose to believe the best. Has David hurt me? Yes, but he’s also been faithful and trustworthy. As I remind myself about the positive times as well as the painful, I am free to believe the best about my husband.
Trust doesn’t always come easily, but trust can be gained by choosing to believe in our spouse and think the best.
After placing your trust in the Lord, how will you choose to believe the best about your spouse?
