The beloved of the Lord shall dwell in safety by Him, who shelters him all the day long. Deuteronomy 33:12

When our children were babies, each of them had a special something to take to bed for security. It may have been a blanket, a favorite doll, or a pacifier. At night when we heard crying or restlessness, we knew there was a good chance it was because the baby’s prized possession had fallen out of reach. As soon as we returned it to the child’s reach, he or she settled back down and fell asleep. Apparently our children needed the security of their important possessions being with them.

Today’s Scripture verse references the safety and security that comes from being close to God, from being by Him. The presence and proximity of our God is an important principle of security. We not only need the Lord’s presence, we need Him in close proximity—by us.

In marriage it works the same way: There are repeated times—times of sorrow and rejoicing, adversity and success—when we need our spouse by us.

We also find in today’s Scripture the importance commitment plays in dwelling in safety and security. How long will the Lord be by us? “All the day long” is His answer in this verse.

Remembering all this made me (Teresa) think of David and how he gives me security. His physical presence and commitment to me reassures me that I am loved and safe. I still have that security.

Because God knows your need for security and wants to meet it, He desires to create in marriage a safe haven away from the outside world. Marriage is to be a place where we can be by one another and by Him.
