Sandy and Rod desired enrichment in their marriage, but there was a bit of a communication problem. Each of them cared deeply for the other, but they rarely expressed it. They were both extremely reserved people. In addition to having trouble verbalizing their feelings, they also made poor eye contact and exhibited very closed body language when they talked to one another.

After taking some time with them to address some unresolved hurt within their relationship, we tackled their lack of expressiveness. We started by giving them each a list of twenty things they could say to exalt each other: You’re incredible! You’re fantastic! You’re beautiful! You’re unique! You’re precious! You’re important! You’re sensational! You’re exciting! You’re good for me! You’re a good friend! You’re a delight to live with! You mean a lot to me! You make me happy! You make me laugh! You brighten my day! You mean the world to me! You’re a joy! You’re wonderful! You’re the best! You’re a blessing from God!

We asked Rod and Sandy to each pick one of the exaltations that expressed their inner feelings, then hold hands, look each other in the eye, and verbalize it. It was difficult for them at first, but as Rod softly said, “You mean a lot to me” and Sandy replied, “You’re special to me,” tears flowed and they were closer to their goal of enrichment in their marriage.

Today’s Scripture verse reminds us that the law of liberty, Christ’s law of love, will impact our speech. It’s an important truth that words carry with them the power to tear down as well as the power to build up.

May we always purposely speak words that build up our spouses.
