David and I are so grateful to God for showing us mercy throughout the first ten years of our marriage. It was only through His grace that our marriage was able to first survive, then thrive. Our marriage was not made in heaven, but when we received Christ as our Savior, God started to heal our marriage and then use our past to help mend other hurting marriages. Since we’ve received God’s mercy, it’s easy for us to give others mercy.

The apostle Paul gives an important insight into the divine mercy of God, namely that it’s contagious. When God touches a few with His mercy, through those few many others are touched by that mercy. It’s the nature of divine mercy to produce “cheerful givers”—saints filled with gratitude—who pass on to others what they have received.

One special gift of mercy David and I can give is to minister to pastors, missionaries, and other couples working to serve God. It’s very hard to find someone to share your problems with when you’re in church-related work. Everyone expects you to bear burdens but not to have them. David and I can show mercy by being available to hear these people’s personal problems without their feeling judged.

David and I are grateful for the mercy God has shown us in our marriage and family life. But we are even more grateful for the opportunity to be “cheerful givers” of this grace when we pass it along to those around us.
