Ever wonder why people are so often anxious? Anxiety is common in individuals and in marriages today. There are many reasons for this, one of which is the fear of inadequacy. I (Teresa) feel inadequate when I face issues or decisions I don’t know how to handle, and anxiety results. When I’m put on the spot and have to deal with certain challenges in life and draw a blank, anxiety rises within me. And when I feel anxious, tension, anger, and conflict often result.

“Training” can address the anxiety I feel over my inadequacy—inadequacy in handling certain discipline issues with the kids, inadequacy in certain social situations, inadequacy in my marriage, inadequacy in my service to God.

In today’s Scripture passage, Christ reminds His disciples of the power of our influence on others. It would be Christ’s training of His disciples that would prepare them to lead His church. Their training would be comprehensive, covering all the subjects they would need to know about after He returned to the Father. Jesus knew they would encounter skeptics, rejection, legalists, and demons, so He wanted to train them how to handle these things. The disciples would study home life, giving, kingdom life, and Christ’s future return. They would come to find Christ throughout the Old Testament Scriptures, and many of them would help complete the Scriptures as the Holy Spirit directed.

Christ’s objective in this training was to give the disciples a sense of adequacy. It’s this adequacy that ensures that the workman need not be ashamed, handling adequately the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15).

Training in adequacy, whether at home or in His work, is vital.
