My soul magnifies the Lord. Luke 1:46

We can experience in our souls emotions such as gratitude, thankfulness, and wonder. Wonder and awe must have been at least part of what Mary felt when she made her joyful declaration to God, as recorded in today’s Scripture verse.

Mary’s exaltation and gratitude were not about possessions or position, but about relationship. As the most blessed of all women, her blessing came through a divinely provided relationship. Her exaltation and worship were responses to such favor from the Father.

In a similar way, we who are married have been divinely favored with the spouse God has uniquely provided us. The apostle James reminds us that every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father above (James 1:17). The same God who blessed Mary with His announcement of the Christ child has sent me Teresa as one of His most special gifts.

The mysteries of God’s workings are a joyous wonder, and that includes the spouse He has given me. His blessings are endless, and many of them come through this life partner.

More and more frequently in these passing years of marriage, I’ve recognized a touching sense of deep gratitude for my life partner. She’s a partner who has seen my “darker side” and still accepts me, a partner whose strengths lovingly balance my weaknesses, and a partner who thinks of me, gives to me, cares about me. She’s the partner my God has given me.

Because of this, my soul magnifies the Lord.
