In God We Trust
trust - In God We Trust
A wicked messenger falls into trouble, but a faithful ambassador brings health. Proverbs 13:17
“I don’t trust you any farther than I can throw you!”
Some of us feel this way about our spouses. Marital trust is such a delicate thing. It can be destroyed gradually, by many small wrongs, or instantly, by one huge wrong.
Given that all of us are imperfect and none of us is totally trustworthy, how do we build trust within our marriages? We start by totally putting our trust in God. We must realize that God is worthy of our complete trust. Then we must learn to trust our spouses, knowing ahead of time that as human beings they will to some degree fail us. We need to remember that we will fail our spouses as well, but that we can have enough trust in each other to “glue” the relationship together in times of failure. When our spouses fail, we need to turn to God for help, as our ultimate security is in Him and not in our spouses.
God, help me put my complete trust in You, and help me trust my spouse to You.
An excellent goal for any marriage journey is to be “faithful ambassadors,” as today’s Scripture passage puts it. The testimony of our deepened trust speaks loudly about the One who is at work to knit our hearts together. In an age of cynicism and skepticism, the faith-filled marriage is a powerful ambassador for Christ, as it calls attention to the health of our relationship and to the One who is making it healthy.
So trust God with it all, and trust your spouse to Him. You will find that trust to be a building block for true marital intimacy.
In what specific areas of your marriage do you need to trust God better? What steps will you take to build that trust?
