My “Big Five-Oh” birthday was nearing, and I (Teresa) wasn’t particularly pleased about it. I felt old, and I did a pretty good job of letting anyone within earshot know. David did his best to counter my complaints, but it didn’t help. I was determined to have a pity party about the unfairness of getting older.

I assumed David and I would just go out for dinner together to celebrate. As we headed toward our table, I looked up and saw eight of our closest friends sitting there. David had secretly asked them to come celebrate my birthday with us.

That really lifted my spirits. David had gone to a lot of trouble to let me know that I was a person of great value. He turned what I was bent on making an unpleasant birthday into one of the best I’ve ever had. I felt exalted that day—like a queen.

It’s really the Lord who “makes great,” but He may often want to involve me in His plans for my spouse. David’s time and effort made me feel great, and I have the same kind of opportunities to exalt my husband. It is within my power to make my spouse feel special. In my hands lies the power to praise my husband, lift him up, and treat him with honor and respect.

Since that birthday evening, I have begun to look for ways to make David feel great—like a king. I’ve looked for opportunities to praise him in front of our kids and grandkids. I’ve made sure our home (and my heart) is ready to provide him with much-needed rest and tranquillity at the end of the day.

What a blessing it is to colabor with the Creator in making your spouse feel great!
