forgiveness - A New Beginning

If you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. Mark 11:25

I (David) was looking forward to a vacation with Teresa. We were finally getting away from kids, ministry, church, work, and the stresses of life.

As we arrived at the bed-and-breakfast, we checked in at the front desk. I could sense that something was wrong with Teresa, but I waited until we got to our room to ask what was bothering her. Teresa talked about feeling uncomfortable with the facilities. The hotel I had chosen was somewhat rustic, and Teresa doesn’t “do rustic.” We discussed our options and decided to go ahead and stay for the weekend.

Several upgraded rooms later, we were finally settled and had a few minutes to relax before dinner. I began to reflect on several of our past trips together and began to get increasingly angry. I work hard so we can go on these trips! I thought. Boy, a little appreciation would be nice! She hasn’t said “thank you” for any of this. All she’s done is complain.

I never said anything to Teresa that weekend, and I had certainly not worked through the process of forgiving her. I have since realized what a mistake that was. I spent my whole weekend fuming and sulking. I never talked with the Lord about my feelings that weekend. I wasn’t able to enjoy my relationship with Him. My getaway vacation was spoiled because of the unforgiveness I harbored in my heart.

Teresa and I have since worked through the issues of that weekend. I just wish I’d done it sooner.

God wants us to restore our relationships with one another as soon as possible because He doesn’t want us to be robbed of the joy of a forgiving marriage.
