Legacy

How often do we think of our legacy? My hunch is that, like me, you’re more worried about what you’re going to make for dinner right now than you are about leaving a legacy for your children—but Scripture teaches that we should live with our legacy in mind. Death isn’t a question of if, but rather of when. When the funeral is over and the mourners have gone their separate ways, the thing that will remain is our legacy. Our legacy in death is a function of the choices we make in life. The word character derives from a Greek word meaning “emboss” or “engrave.” As we make consistent choices over time, they leave a permanent mark on our character. We become what we choose, and the legacy we leave is a function of the choices we’ve made day by day. What choices are you making right now? How will they impact the legacy you leave behind? What will your life say about who and what you choose to love? By God’s grace, we can leave behind a legacy of love that will be passed on for generations.

The LORD is good.

His unfailing love continues forever,

and his faithfulness continues to each generation.

I remember your genuine faith, for you share the faith that first filled your grandmother Lois and your mother, Eunice. And I know that same faith continues strong in you.

WHEN YOU WONDER IF YOUR INFLUENCE MATTERS . . .

Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.

WHEN YOU THINK OF THE BLESSING OF SEEING YOUR GRANDCHILDREN . . .

How joyful are those who fear the LORD—

all who follow his ways!

You will enjoy the fruit of your labor.

How joyful and prosperous you will be! . . .

May the LORD continually bless you from Zion.

May you see Jerusalem prosper as long as you live.

May you live to enjoy your grandchildren.

May Israel have peace!
