The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and the one who is wise saves lives.

Proverbs 11:30

Why is it important to chase after wisdom? It’s necessary for our own sake. Reading through the book of Proverbs—a chapter a day—will help you make wise decisions, the kinds of decisions that bring soul health and soul prosperity.

But there’s another aspect to wisdom you may not realize. According to this verse, wisdom saves lives. Wisdom is important not merely for your sake: wisdom allows you to walk alongside others, helping them navigate their lives. You might, for instance, be able to warn people who are about to do self-destructive things. You can help a friend steer clear of financial disaster. Acts like these are ways of saving lives on this earth.

God is gracious to you in so many ways, but he does not gift you with righteousness and wisdom only for your sake. He blesses you so you can bless others. He grants you wisdom for your own life journey and so that you can help others avoid bad decisions. What a privilege!

Lord, I need your wisdom today, not only for myself, but for the sake of those I love, amen.
