God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

2 Corinthians 5:21

This verse powerfully summarizes the gospel with elegant simplicity.

Jesus—God’s beautiful Son—was without sin. Yet he became our sin on the cross. In Jesus, God condemned all sins for all time. With his broken body and shed blood, Jesus satisfied God’s justice, then ushered all sinners before God’s throne. We are no longer known as sinners, but as righteous ones—all because of Jesus’ amazing sacrifice.

Your salvation from the punishment for your sins is not up to you—and you couldn’t save yourself if you had to. But you don’t have to save yourself. You’ve been saved: the price has been paid once and for all.

Living in light of this grace is freeing. You no longer have to look over your shoulder, worrying if you “made it” into God’s kingdom. Again, your salvation is not dependent on you; it’s dependent on Jesus’ perfect sacrifice on the cross. Thank him for that today.

Lord, I’m grateful for your sacrifice. Thank you that I can walk in freedom today, knowing my salvation is sure in you, amen.
