Beautiful Word Devotional #295

“From the least to the greatest, all are greedy for gain.”

Jeremiah 6:13

On behalf of God, Jeremiah, the weeping prophet, spoke these words about and to the nation of Israel, but his words are still true today. Too many of us aren’t satisfied with what we have. Instead we long for the next thing, then the next.

Such greed is the opposite of God’s generosity. So when we live lives of greed, we don’t please God or accurately represent him. The nation of Israel was to be a light on the hill, shining forth God’s goodness. But they failed: they were too busy in their pursuit of more and more.

When “all are greedy for gain,” all of us lose. If instead we chose to live outrageously generous lives, all of us would win. God’s people giving and receiving, glorifying him by their obedience and love, could truly be a light in this dark world, declaring with our actions the goodness of God.

Lord, forgive me when I’ve not been satisfied with what you’ve given me, when I want more stuff rather than wanting more of you, amen.
