Beautiful Word Devotional #221

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”

John 15:5

We human beings don’t do well if we’re not living with a sense of purpose. We want to make a difference—or, to use Jesus’ words, we want to “bear much fruit.” What Jesus taught here is that we can do nothing of eternal value without him. We will make no eternal impact if we are doing things in our own strength.

So Jesus’ call to you today is to abide or remain in him. He explained with an example from nature: Jesus is the vine that provides the lifeblood to you, the branch attached to that vine. You must stay connected to him, or death and decay will come.

If you want to have a truly fruitful life, abide in Jesus: spend your time loving him, listening for his voice, adoring him in worship, and imploring him through prayer. When you do, your life will indeed bear much fruit.

Lord, I want to bear fruit for you, so please help me to abide in you today, amen.
