Beautiful Word Devotional #14

When I lie down I think, “How long before I get up?” The night drags on, and I toss and turn until dawn.

Job 7:4

Have you ever felt like Job did when he spoke these words? Has life ever been so complicated and stressful that you’ve tossed and turned, unable to sleep, mulling over your situation until the birds sang their morning songs?

Job had reason to toss and turn. Everything had been stripped away from him—his wealth, key relationships, his health. In this desperate state, Job mourned.

Mourning comes before dancing. When we learn to mourn well, we have greater capacity to live well. At the end of the book of Job, he shared how, in his former life prior to tragedy, he had only heard God. But now, after experiencing tragedy, he had seen God.

So take heart. You may have tossed and turned last night. God may seem far away. But as you work through your worries, you will begin to see God in the midst of your circumstances. Morning comes after mourning.

Lord, help me as I grieve. Please remind me today that the morning is coming, and your presence is assured, amen.
