Beautiful Word Devotional #138

Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.

Joshua 1:8

To keep God’s Word on our lips, we need to know it and immerse ourselves in it. That means reading it, memorizing it, and thinking about it—or, to use Joshua’s word, meditating on it.

But what exactly does it mean to meditate on Scripture? One very simple way is the practice of Lectio Divina (“divine reading”). Take a passage and read it out loud. Ask God to speak to you through its words. Stop to listen. Pray. Then read through the passage a second time, then a third, asking God to give you deeper insight each time.

Another great practice is to simply write out Scripture. Find a simple journal; then write out your favorite passages, asking God to cement those words in your heart as you put them on the page.

Lord, I want to know your Word, not just intellectually, but in my soul. And I want my life to reflect my knowledge of it, amen.
