Beautiful Word Devotional #130
We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.
Romans 5:3–4
Most people glory in their accomplishments, resumes, pedigrees, or the letters after their names. But Paul gloried in his sufferings—and that is definitely countercultural kingdom thinking. It’s the absolute opposite of what the world values.
Why would anyone in his right mind glory in suffering? Shouldn’t we avoid suffering?
Paul knew, though, that ease never produces good character traits. Unfortunately, we only grow through pain. And Paul identified some of the growth that results: we develop perseverance, character, and hope when we suffer and invite Jesus into that suffering.
While you shouldn’t chase after suffering, you can change your perspective when it arrives on your doorstep. With wisdom, you can welcome suffering as an opportunity for significant spiritual growth and character development. Ask God today to reframe the way you view suffering. Ask him to teach you what it means to glory in it.
Lord, I need a change in my perspective on the suffering in my life. Give me your perspective, I pray, amen.
