We know that God is triune—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. But how does that work when we pray? In the New Testament, formal prayer is usually offered through Christ to the Father in the power of the Spirit. In today’s Scripture, we read, “For through [Jesus] we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.” But what about those moments when you want to address your prayers directly to Jesus? You can. Many New Testament examples show people praying directly to the Savior, including Paul, who pleaded with Jesus to remove the thorn in his flesh.^a The Holy Spirit, of course, is very happy with our prayers to God’s Son, because the Spirit never draws attention to Himself, but always points to Jesus. Just keep praying . . . and be assured that all three members of our triune God are listening!

Yes, Lord Jesus, there are times when I long to pour out my heart directly to You—my Savior, King, and Friend. I remember how You suffered for me on the cross, died for my sins, and then came out of the tomb on that best-of-all Sunday morning. I think of You walking on the water toward me in the storm and the night, and I want to come to You.
