With a recent pregnancy and health complications, Ashley found herself putting on more weight than she’d bargained for. She told a friend, “I want to be beautiful in God’s eyes, but I really struggle with wanting to be beautiful as the world portrays women.” Nearly two thousand years ago, the apostle Peter spoke to this issue: “Don’t be concerned about the outward beauty that depends on jewelry, or beautiful clothes, or hair arrangement. Be beautiful inside, in your hearts, with the lasting charm of a gentle and quiet spirit that is so precious to God.” God doesn’t see you the way you see yourself. He doesn’t think of you as the world thinks of you. So whether you are a woman or a man, don’t be deceived by what you see in the mirror. Seek a calm, trusting, gentle spirit. It’s what is lovely—and handsome—in the eyes of the Lord.

Lord, the images of beautiful people with perfect bodies and trendy clothing show up everywhere I turn. Help me to see myself as You do—a child of God, a daughter or son of the great King, a sister, brother, and friend of Jesus Christ Himself. Today I want to wrap myself in Your beauty and let Your radiance and peace shine from my face.
