Did you ever wonder if Jesus sang during His days on earth? We know worshipers sang in the synagogues, and Jesus’ family probably sang during the holy feast days. But did Jesus himself hum a melody or let loose with a song? The only place the Bible actually records such a time is Matthew 26:30: “When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.” It was in the upper room on the night Jesus was betrayed. Of all places and times to sing, Jesus sang with His friends on the way to His arrest, crucifixion, and death. Our natural inclination, of course, is to stop singing when we’re sad, disappointed, or in pain. But Jesus sang as He faced His darkest hour, just as Paul and Silas would one day sing while in chains in a Philippian jail. No matter what emotions you have today, follow the Lord’s lead and ask God to put a song in your heart.

Lord, if I dwell on my circumstances, the music just dies away. But when I make You my song, it wells up again. Even in the dark times. Even through tears. I sing my praise to You, my Savior, Brother, Lord, and Friend. I sing my gratitude and praise for forgiveness of sins, for Your sweet companionship, and for the hope of heaven.
