Will Power

Leon Jones was our church’s maintenance man for over twenty-five years. He always had a smile on his face and nicknames for different kids at the church. One young boy named Will he called “Will Power.” Without fail, when Leon would see Will, he would say, “Will Power,” and Will would crack a smile and walk on.

It is interesting to watch kids grow and live up to the names that they have been given. Will is a very disciplined young man who is excited to learn and grow and absorb as much of life as he can.

Will isn’t academically motivated as much as he is practically motivated. For example, Will already has his real estate license at the age of twenty-two because he wants to sell rural land and work his own land. He is also learning to become a welder. You see, Will is gifted with his hands, and he isn’t afraid to work hard or try new things.

Will has already achieved a lot in his twenty-two years, and his life and nickname remind me of 2 Timothy 1:7, which states, “God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.”

Whatever your name or nickname, remember whose name you carry and seek to live up to his name. When you need willpower, ask the Lord, for he has given you a spirit of power, love, and self-discipline.
