Two Feet Down

I have always wondered how hard it is for receivers to get their second foot down before going out of bounds. When they transition from the college to the pro game, I am assuming that they spend a significant amount of time mastering this. It is a shame when a wideout makes a spectacular downfield catch over his shoulder and barely misses. Sometimes the ball is thrown in a way that leads him just a bit too far outside, and he is unable to secure it while staying in bounds.

Tending to our souls also takes work. As a wideout is disciplined in his route running and as he practices the repetitions of getting two feet in bounds, we, too, need to be disciplined not to be led out of bounds by others. I look back over my time as a young man and wonder how much God may have spared me from in spite of some of my foolish relationships and actions.

One of the keys to tending our souls is to take inventory of the people that we spend time with. Proverbs 1:10 provides us a stern warning, from a father to his son: “My child, if sinners entice you, turn your back on them!” Scripture also declares in 1 Corinthians 15:33, “Don’t be fooled by those who say such things, for ‘bad company corrupts good character.’” If we aren’t being disciplined in the relationships we choose, those we run with may just lead us out of bounds.
