Timing Matters

Former Baylor University quarterback Bryce Petty said, “There were 1,786 days between my final high school start and my first start at Baylor. During that time, I learned that God has a purpose and plan for me, and it’s not on my time. It’s on his.”

According to the law of timing, “The right thing at the wrong time is the wrong thing.”^a As a leader, I have dual processes going on as I make decisions. Process one is seeking the right answer to the problem or opportunity before me. Process two is looking for just the right timing of that decision.

I do this because I know that the right solution at the wrong time is going to cause me problems. But the right decision at the right time is going to fit like a glove. I believe that our heavenly Father leads in a similar way when he calls us to a task or vocation, but then has us wait. What we don’t see in the moments of our impatience is the bigger picture of how he is going before us to prepare our way.

Psalm 37:5-7 declares, “Commit everything you do to the LORD. Trust him, and he will help you. He will make your innocence radiate like the dawn, and the justice of your cause will shine like the noonday sun. Be still in the presence of the LORD, and wait patiently for him to act.”

Waiting on God is a very challenging thing. But what I can accomplish in my own striving cannot compare to what he can do when he moves. You see, there is nothing that I can do to make my life shine like the dawn and the purpose of my cause as if it were high noon. But he can! If you find yourself in a season of waiting, spend time with Psalm 37:1-11.

Commit everything you do to the LORD. Trust him, and he will help you.
