The Voice of Pain

Randall Cunningham, the great NFL MVP quarterback of the Eagles and Vikings, writes about pain in his book Lay It Down: How Letting Go Brings Out Your Best. Randall is an authority on the impact of pain not just because of the physical abuse his body took on the football field but because of the deep pain he experienced through the loss of his two-year-old son in a drowning accident.

Cunningham writes of the voice of pain, “Pain says, ‘Don’t get up. Just lie here awhile.’ Pain’s voice is loud, perhaps the loudest voice you’ll hear in your life.”^a

Has pain knocked you down? I want to encourage you to pick up Randall’s book. I believe that his authenticity in dealing with excruciating pain can give you hope that you, too, can stand up and run another play. I also want to encourage you to press into the Lord in your pain.

Isaiah 61:1-2 describes the ministry of Jesus and how he dealt with and will deal with pain. It states, “The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is upon me, for the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to proclaim that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed. He has sent me to tell those who mourn that the time of the LORD’s favor has come, and with it, the day of God’s anger against their enemies.”

Jesus is near to those who mourn and to the brokenhearted. He can bring you the comfort you need. Also, let me remind you that there will be a day when he even puts death to death. Every tear will be wiped away. There will be no more suffering. The time of the Lord’s favor will come.
