Stop And Tell Lester Thanks
Stop and Tell Lester Thanks
Every community has a Lester—that person with too much life left to live to be as encumbered as he is because of illness or an accident. I met Lester on a jog. I was halfway through my three-mile run when I finally decided today was the day that I would stop. As I approached, I took out my earbuds, lifted my sunglasses, and met this man who is out with his walker every single day.
I had wanted to stop before, but I wasn’t sure what I would say. But today I took the time to thank Lester. I slowed my gait and said, “Sir, what is your name?” With a half smile on his face and a twinkle in his blue eyes, he said with slurred speech, “Lester.” I then said, “Well, Lester, it is nice to meet you. I want you to know that you are an inspiration. I see you out here working to get better, and it makes me want to get better. Thank you.” I think he was dumbfounded, but he looked me in the eye and said, “Thank you.”
Proverbs 27:17 states, “As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.” Be thankful for those like Lester who inspire you to continue on no matter the challenge before you. Also, know that you don’t have to be disabled like Lester to inspire others and sharpen them with your life.
As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.
