Stick–to–itiveness

Stick–to–itiveness

The great Tom Landry once said, “Setting a goal is not the main thing. It is deciding how you will go about achieving it and staying with that plan.” One of the things that I admire the most about my wife is her ability to set a goal, make a plan, and stay on track. She is tenacious and unrelenting.

I believe God knew that I would need a mate with stick-to–itiveness because I am easily distracted, diverted, and taken off course. Her discipline far exceeds mine, and it challenges me to grow in my discipline.

The book of Proverbs is full of advice about being disciplined in every area of our lives—in friendship, in business, in marriage, and in our finances. The book opens with these words:

These are the proverbs of Solomon, David’s son, king of Israel. Their purpose is to teach people wisdom and discipline, to help them understand the insights of the wise. Their purpose is to teach people to live disciplined and successful lives, to help them do what is right, just, and fair. (Proverbs 1:1-3)

You still need discipline, whether you are like my wife or easily distracted like me. Consider turning to the pithy wisdom of Proverbs. Since college, I have been investing my time striving to read a chapter of Proverbs each and every day. Given my need for discipline, I am far from perfect on this quest. But I will testify to the fact that investing in a chapter a day has helped me tremendously to acquire a more disciplined and prudent life.

Notice also the purpose of Proverbs: “To teach people to live disciplined and successful lives.” Who doesn’t want a successful life? Get into Proverbs, and heed its instruction. You will be glad you did.
