Coach Gary Kubiak’s Super Bowl win with the Denver Broncos had those of us in Houston wondering why it couldn’t have been done here. Kubiak lost his job with the Texans after going 2–14 in the 2013 season. It was a season like none other in Houston, one that saw Kubiak collapse on the sidelines and get rushed to the hospital. The truth of the matter is that challenging seasons can make us or break us. I wonder if the challenges of 2013 prepared Coach Kubiak for the challenges of 2015.

How do you navigate challenging seasons? Have you ever been overwhelmed with what you were facing and wondered how you were going to navigate it so that you could come out better on the other side?

I walked through one of these seasons from August 2014 to August 2015. I have to admit, it was one of the most challenging seasons in my life. Because of my role as senior pastor, I was leading a team that found itself negotiating a land exchange with the city government. It was a complicated negotiation, and the political climate made it even more challenging. Every one of the council members was term limited, and a slate of candidates ran in opposition to this proposed exchange.

There aren’t classes in seminary that cover these matters. Feeling as though I was on the outer edge of ignorance, I realized I needed to get some people around me who could help. So I surrounded myself with a team of wise counselors whose wisdom enriched me at every turn. I also spent a lot of time seeking God’s direction. The end result was a good one for the church.

Proverbs 4:7 states, “Getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do!”

Are you facing a season in your life that seems bigger than you can handle? Get wisdom! Do this by seeking out wise and godly counsel and by spending intentional time with God, seeking his leading.
