Seeing And Knowing

Seeing and Knowing

Donner Atwood, a retired pastor in the Reformed Church in America, tells a story in the Christian Globe. Atwood helps us see the loving hand of our God over our lives. He writes,

One night a house caught fire and a young boy was forced to flee to the roof. The father stood on the ground below with outstretched arms calling to his son, “Jump! I’ll catch you.” He knew the boy had to jump to save his life. All the boy could see, however, was flames, smoke, and blackness. As can be imagined, he was afraid to leave the roof. His father kept yelling, “Jump! I’ll catch you.” But the boy protested, “Daddy, I can’t see you.” The father replied, “I can see you, and that’s all that matters.”a

Isn’t it comforting to know that we have a good heavenly Father who cares for us? He sees what we cannot see. Most importantly, he sees us, and he has given us the Holy Spirit, who will always be with us.

John 14:16-17 declares, “I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.”

No matter what fires you are facing today, you have an Advocate, the Holy Spirit, who is working in and through your life for good.

I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.

John 14:16-17
