Run Another Play

When I launched Vision for Life Radio: Where Faith & Sports Collide, I had the privilege of interviewing former NFL great Randall Cunningham. Cunningham, who now pastors Remnant Ministries in Las Vegas, Nevada, was amazing to watch on the field in Philadelphia and Minnesota and was named the league MVP in 1998.

In June 2010, though, tragedy struck the Cunninghams when their young son Christian drowned in their backyard hot tub. It was the hardest moment of their lives. Cunningham described it as a sack so severe that he wondered if he would ever get up off the turf again. In his book Lay It Down: How Letting Go Brings Out Your Best Cunningham writes, “It’s the hard times that can render us useless, forever on a downward spiral . . . or propel us forward. We can give up or we can stand up and determine in our mind and soul that we will go back to the huddle and run another play.”^a

I have to admit that my interview with Randall was one of my all-time favorites. It was evident through the joy he possessed that God himself had sustained Randall; his wife, Felicity; and the rest of the family. Never have I heard such strength after such tragedy!

Isaiah 12:2 declares, “See, God has come to save me. I will trust in him and not be afraid. The LORD GOD is my strength and my song; he has given me victory.” As you face hard times, grief, and difficulty too severe to bear, I want to encourage you to get up, stand tall, and run another play. God will come to you and save you.
