Putting On That Green Jacket

Putting on That Green Jacket

The green jacket is the coveted prize of the Masters Golf Tournament, one of golf’s four major tournaments. It is held in Augusta, Georgia, each spring. The one who masters “Amen Corner” and bests the rest of the field after four days of competition is the one who has the privilege of being adorned with the green jacket that declares him to be the Masters champion.

The green jacket is given only to those who have mastered both the game of golf and themselves. They have not only perfected their swing, but they have kept their mind and emotions intact in the midst of vast pressure. You see, it is a matter of both swing control and self-control.

Proverbs 25:28 states, “A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls” (ESV). I think this applies to us in many ways—financially, physically, morally, and emotionally. Where do you lack self-control? Is it in your diet? Ask the Lord for strength, and commit to it. Is it in your finances? Seek help, get on a plan, and stick to your budget. Is it a moral issue? Confess your sin to the Lord and to a brother so that you can be restored and set free.

I want to challenge you to realize the necessity of self-control and to ask the Lord to show you where you need to master your mind and emotions. It may be painful at first, but if you stay at it, you will be amazed at the change that is born in your life.

A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.
