Made for a Purpose

In his book Quiet Strength, Tony Dungy talks about his journey through the NFL. He relives one of the greatest years of his career, 1978, and calls it a miracle year. That year, Dungy was healthy, he led his team in interceptions, and the team won the Super Bowl. He says, “Despite all the good things that occurred that year, I can still look back and say that 1978 was the first season in my life in which sports weren’t the most important thing to me. . . . God had me here for a reason, and it wasn’t just to play ball.”^a

Have you stopped to think that maybe there is more to your life than what you do? How can the next year be a standout year for you?

It begins with discovering the love of God through a relationship with Christ. It continues by developing in your faith and your belief that God has a plan and purpose for you. Then you deploy your God-given influence for his purpose and glory. This is the progression of any man of great faith. After he has discovered Christ, he spends time developing in his faith. As he develops, he realizes that he has been gifted uniquely to serve Christ with his talents. He then deploys that talent to make an impact on the world around him.

Matthew 5:14 states, “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.” This is the potent influence that you have as a follower of Christ. Cultivate it, and use it for God’s purpose and glory.
