Lead by Example

Don Shula, two-time Super Bowl–winning head coach of the Miami Dolphins, said, “I don’t know any other way to lead but by example.” Our lives, like it or not, are examples of what is flowing through our hearts. Now that I have typed that, it kind of scares me to consider what example I have set over the last week or so. But leadership unfolds not just in speeches, strategies, and surveys. Leadership emerges from the example that the leader sets.

This begs us to ask ourselves, what example am I setting for others? What do my children, employees, friends, and clients see through me? When I am squeezed and things don’t go my way, what picture am I giving to others? When there is abundance and I’ve had a banner year, will those in my midst see an attitude of gratitude? Will they hear me express thanks to God for his abundant provision?

Colossians 3 gives us a picture of how we might live as examples for our Lord. Just as we get dressed each morning, we must clothe ourselves with these qualities every day. Colossians 3:12-15 states,

Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.

The only way that we will accomplish this is through the help of the Holy Spirit. So get dressed each day by asking the Holy Spirit to help you put on these qualities. Give him an all-access pass to your heart, and live this example out before those in your life.
