It’s Not Over ’til It’s Over

If you watched Super Bowl XLIX, you saw a hard-fought game by both the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks. It was a constant give-and-take with big plays and high emotions. With just over two minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Patriots scored to get ahead by four points.

The Seahawks had plenty of time and, it appeared, the right plan to march down the field and win the game. After a miraculous catch and a short run, the Seahawks were at the goal line. With only twenty seconds left in the game, it looked like a Seahawks repeat victory was inevitable.

But an undrafted rookie for the Patriots, Malcolm Butler, kept his focus on the game, remembered this signal the Seahawks gave from film study, and intercepted the ball, securing another Super Bowl victory for the Patriots. It was an improbable finish to an amazing game.

In Scripture, there are a large number of improbable finishes. When Israel was pressed on all sides, God told Gideon to gather troops to fight the Midianites. What God called him to do next was astounding. He was told to scale back his fighting force from thirty thousand to three hundred men. Through Gideon’s obedience, God taught him that anything was possible with the Lord’s help. Judges 7:9 states, “That night the LORD said, ‘Get up! Go down into the Midianite camp, for I have given you victory over them!’”

Do you have areas in your life where it looks like defeat is inevitable? Remember, with the Lord on your side, victory is always available. Keep your head in the game, and stay focused, because there is still time on the clock. Remember, “It’s not over ’til it’s over.”

That night the LORD said, “Get up! Go down into the Midianite camp, for I have given you victory over them!”
